Easing of COVID-19 Control?
People’s Daily editorial Zhongyin mentioned on their news on People.cn : “The government will prevent COVID-19 from overseas, and block its domestic pandemic”. The “Zero-COVID-19” was disappeared. It would be a signal of easing of strict lockdown in many China cities.
On 14th Nov, Shijiazhuang City, Hebei Province, just started to cancel the routine free PCR test for COVID-19. The Shijiazhuang’s mentioned in its letter to the citizens that “It is people’s responsibility to keep healthy”. The policy horn is becoming louder in Chinese social media. No matter if it was because of the downtrend economic growth, normal life is very important to keep peoples’ life going, even though it would be not very soon.
China's policy has traditionally been inertial. The Double Control policies that had a huge impact on the pesticide industry also lasted from September 2021 until the Central Economic Work Conference in December 2022 before adjustments were made. For an important decision like COVID-19 control, which has far-reaching social implications, more time should be needed for decision-making.
The famous CAC agrochemical exhibition was postponed again a few days ago until May 2023. This is also in line with the general belief that COVID-19 prevention and control will change even more after the Two Conferences in Spring 2023. For Chinese pesticide companies, the inability to meet overseas buyers directly face-to-face is a huge obstacle to business development. BD managers in China agrochemical companies are facing big pressure from top management to have a 2023 business development plan right now. Many company directors and regional sales have recently started to travel abroad to research markets and visit customers. However, it is still difficult for purchasing managers to gain valuable, decision-ready insights into industry developments and future product price trends.
There will be still uncertainty for global people traveling into China the next year. From my point of view, the realistic re-open shall be when China can let people travel aboard which shall be depending on when China resolves the most critical geopolitics issue.
At present, the global situation is a delicate stalemate. Like two sides in a game at a standstill, one wrong move and the whole game would be lost. Global monetary and economic trends and the transformation of China's economy present risks for young Chinese entrepreneurs, but also hidden opportunities. Especially for young Chinese born after 1980, when China really lets us go around the world, our potential as the most energetic group of people will be boundless.
